This course presents an overview of the multicultural counselling field. It helps counsellors to respond to the impact of culture on the counselling process as well as an understandin of cultural differences (e.g. race, age, gender, disablilities, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and religion) ethical and legal issues, and values related to the standards and conduct of profession on acculturation are explored. Students will also develop different skills needed to become culturally competent. This course is designed to increase students’ awareness and knowledge of, and skills related to, multicultural counselling.  Students will also explore diversity and identity issues and discuss their impact on the therapeutic relationship. The application of traditional theoretical orientations and current multicultural theories to culturally diverse groups is addressed.
