Student teachers need to have the time and space to consider the important ideas that have informed the development of education worldwide. Thinking about what they want to achieve as teachers for the development of the children and the society is a necessary condition of the delivery of education in a caring and professional manner.

It is important that the student teachers develop an appreciation for the various philosophical perspectives which impinge the life of the teacher and the students in the education system in Jamaica and the Caribbean. It is also critical that the student teachers develop a deep appreciation of the cultural economic, historical political perspectives that impact the development of the education system in Jamaica and the Caribbean.  It is also imperative for the student teachers to develop an appreciation of philosophy in general and a personal philosophy of education.
