RATIONALE
Literacy pedagogy has been an integral part of the Jamaican teacher education programme. The course, Advanced Studies in Literacy 2 seeks to develop student-teachers' awareness of the historical and current trends in literacy as well as principles and practices for developing children's competences. The course is essential as it exposes/sensitizes student teachers to the theories and practices in literacy in order to achieve the desired literacy standards for Jamaican schools. This course stands out as an advanced area of study because it entails explanation of literacy through analytic and creative processes. Student-teachers who successfully complete this course should have a greater understanding of the processes and principles involved in the development of literacy and should be able to relate more meaningfully to literacy concerns in the Jamaican educational landscape.
